Struggling Platform Fights Back

The past week has seen various whispers and rumors regarding the fate of Google’s cloud gaming service, Stadia. While these stories range from deprioritization to outright abandonment, the internet giant doesn’t appear to be “walking away” from the struggling platform and is instead leveraging its application to other companies and industries.

Several reports online cite that Google is quietly dropping Stadia from its list of priorities for the coming years – with a key element being a spurred interest in researching major league releases to include on the platform. In a report from Business Insider, however, it is suggested that Google is not so much abandoning the beleaguered project, as adapting the technology himself in uses outside of the retail sale of video games.

Google is believed to be buying the Stadia service as ‘for hire’ technology under the ‘Google Stream’ brand – the company having already had negotiations with publishers such as Capcom, Bungie and trendy fitness factory Peloton. Concepts range from the ability to use Stadia to deliver exclusive demos to using technology from Peloton’s line of network-connected gym equipment. For example, AT&T users can already stream Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham Knight directly through their web browsers. Although the Google brand is not referenced at all, this feature is powered by Stadia technology.

And so, it looks like Google still has ideas for the Stadia service and is still open for business for those who want to integrate the cloud service in any way possible. Unfortunately, this news will only be a bit of comfort to the general Stadia community, who clearly bought the product… well… to play brand new video games.

Google Stadia is not on the way out… Except, perhaps, in the sector very it was designed to…
