Stranger from Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is not a remake, nor a prequel to the original Final Fantasy, which celebrates its 35th anniversary later this year. Instead, the action ahead Final Fantasy spinoff is something of a take on the time-looped story of the classic role-playing game.
A new (and final) trailer for the game, featuring music by Frank Sinatra, hints at its emotional and tragic stakes.
Players will experience this story from the perspective of Jack and his allies, believing themselves to be infamous prophetic warriors of light on a mission to slay Chaos, the original’s final boss. The developers of Stranger from Paradise Final Fantasy Origin have already essentially ruined an element of their game: Jack is Jack Garland, aka Garland, aka the other big bad guy in Final Fantasy who created this game’s 2,000 year time loop and eventually transforms into Chaos. Stranger from Paradise Final Fantasy Origin Producer Jin Fujiwara told Polygon in an interview that familiarity with the events of Final Fantasy will certainly provide context for Jack’s violent journey through the land of Cornelia, but is not a prerequisite for enjoying his story. .
“The game is created so that you don’t necessarily have to familiarize yourself with the original first Final FantasyFujiwara said through an interpreter. “If you have an understanding of the original title, it might help expand the lore you know. We have our heroes, who believe they are the warriors of light, but actually turn out to be like the enemy , Garland. “With our introduction of the title […] we have shown that for a Warrior of Light, [Jack] seemed a lot more violent than your typical hero,” Fujiwara said. “The team thought rather than hanging it up in the air – players kind of speculating ‘Wait, that’s a lot more violent than expected. This hero character appears to be much older and more mature than your typical Final Fantasy protagonist. – rather than mislead people, the team felt it would be best if we were more transparent about what the story was about. That’s why we decided that we wanted to reveal this as a story about the villain, but there’s a rich story behind it that we want to show. I felt this would allow us to communicate much more clearly with our players.
Fujiwara continued, “I don’t think we can sum it up in one sentence, [to say] if it’s a tragedy. It’s not necessarily just a sad story. It is very difficult to put your finger on it. But it describes the story of these protagonists entering the narrative believing they are warriors of light, but they end up becoming villains.
“There is a reason behind everything that happens. So again, while it’s not entirely a tragedy, we want to feel like this is a Final Fantasy title. So we want there to be that sense of hope as well. It is very difficult to describe it in very few words. So we would like to encourage players to try the story and find out for themselves.
A new trailer for Stranger from Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, released Monday and partially set to Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” certainly hints at tragedy. It teases forgotten memories and lost loves, how Jack’s all-consuming rage will lead to regret, and the ultimate fate of Warriors of Light hopefuls. Fujiwara said the choice to use Sinatra’s signature song, later famous by Elvis Presley and Sid Vicious, illustrated Jack’s journey.
“The story is going to describe Jack and how he lived and the choices he made throughout his life,” Fujiwara explained. “And so the fact that he’s kind of living his life and making the choices that he’s confident that he’s not going to regret, we felt really matched with the lyrics of ‘My Way,’ so we wanted to incorporate this song [in the trailer].”
Stranger from Paradise Final Fantasy Origin will be released on March 18 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC (via Epic Games Store), Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
