I had the chance to direct David’s first series, the Shadowdance novels, so when I heard we were ready to work on his next series, I was super excited. SKYBORN (US | UK | AUS) is about the Seraphim, an elite military force protecting a floating island of Weshern. Seraphim guard the remnants of humanity, defying gravity with ancient wings and harnessing powerful elements to wage war in the skies.

The new series was a different design challenge from the Shadowdance books in that we wanted to convey a different feel for the cover. In David’s first series, we wanted to emphasize the main character, a ninja-like assassin, and the energetic action of the books. In born from the sky, the characters are a bit more unique in that they have metal wings to fly, wield swords, and wear military uniforms. Ultimately, the new series had to convey a great adventure.

In what I would call fortuitous timing, Tommy Arnold’s work fell on my desk as we were discussing covers. His style just hit the nail on the head for this project. His ability to illustrate characters was perfect. He could also beautifully handle textures: fabrics, metals, flames, etc. And above all, his illustrations really draw the viewer in and engage you. It was a no-brainer to reach out and pick up Tommy.

So after defining what we wanted for the covers, we made Tommy move. Couldn’t have had more fun designing David’s super fun new series with such a talented artist!

Your whole party still benefits from the XP earned from battles and such, but with very few trainers – who can’t be rematched, of course – and no Gyms, how do you level up quickly? One method is to buy Exp. Bonn Sweets at Jubilife Village. While it can be quite expensive, it’s possible if you farm valuable items from space-time warps (more on that here) and sell them for Pokedollars.
