Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 has all the subtlety of Thor’s hammer, but it’s better for it

cre: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 has all the subtlety of Thor’s hammer, but it’s better for it

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 isn’t interested in being subtle or loving the movies. He just wants to be silly cartoon fun – and that’s awesome.

The world of Marvel Comics is undoubtedly one of the hottest entertainment properties, and in gaming we currently have two very different styles of play vying for our attention: the lavishly produced Avengers title from Square Enix, similar to MCU, and Nintendo’s. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, a game that loves to look more like a Saturday morning cartoon version of the heroes than the ones you might know from the movies.

These two games actually occupy very different spaces in multiple ways. Square Enix’s Avengers title is clearly very expensive and, from the brief overview we’ve seen so far, pretty well polished. But its rather lackluster movie-inspired designs have left many fans cold as the game’s structure is still something unknown. Based on a first half hour with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Nintendo’s title is almost the exact opposite, in some ways feeling a bit cheap and rough around the edges, but it’s also kind of brainless fun in which anyone can jump and fall. love with, with a colorful artistic flair to match.

The hands-on video embedded above kind of speaks for itself – Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is lovely and damn fun, but it also comes with its share of jank, mostly present in the demo I played in the form of a profoundly uncooperative camera. The camera fights with both the environment and the players: in the four-player cooperative game as in the demo, the camera stretches back and forth, zooms in and out, desperately trying to keep everything the world in the shot. It’s often not very successful at this as players stretch the rubber band that is the visible play area to the breaking point in search of new goons to smash.

As the camera works to counter this, it gets tangled up on towering background elements in the environment. It’s not ideal, and at best it’s annoying – but at worst the constant camera movement can be a little nauseating. There’s none of the sleek cooperative camerawork of Traveler’s Tales Lego sets here. To be fair, the camera is apparently strictly a local multiplayer issue – for single player play or online co-op you get a more dedicated single player camera, eliminating one of the main reasons it looks so broken in the first place.

At the same time, however, one suspects that this type of design is almost intentional, even when it’s a little broken. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is not about subtlety. It’s so many attack effects flashing and appearing on screen that you can barely keep track of what you’re doing. These are multiple super character team moves that do 150,000 damage and nearly drop the frame rate in the process.

It’s the video game equivalent of Mjölnir crashing into your skull to finally give you a sweet release. You’re so indoctrinated by flashing lights and big numbers that you kind of forget about the lousy bits.

So you learn to take the rough with the smooth. The dodgy camera, the occasionally iffy frame rate – you smile and put up with them because there’s plenty more to like. Like a worthwhile character roster, delightfully cheesy comic book-accurate dialogue, and what seems like a half-decent RPG progression system, with each character hiding surprising depth and a range of loot items to find, to equip and experience.

There are even specific team bonuses for bringing together characters with natural affinities – so it looks like there will be a surprising amount of hidden depth, and that depth should already increase over the months post-release with new additions. of characters. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 may not be the most polished Marvel game to be released in the near future – but it seems like a safe bet that it will be the most immediately fun.
