The Murder She Wrote

It’s the year of our lord 2022, but that won’t stop developers from exploring the most niche of niche game genres: adventure FMV. The latest in this long line of original releases comes in the form of The Centenary Case: A Shijima Storywhich will be released next month on PlayStation, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Directed by Koichiro Ito, who brought us the deliciously bonkers of 2008 428: Shibuya Scramble, the Centennial Affair is a period drama that tasks the player with solving a series of murders – all occurring within the same family line over a period of 100 years. Our story unfolds in three distinct parts, taking place in 1922, 1972 and finally 2022, as the player steps into the role of detective novelist Haruka Kagami, determined to find the solution to these strange temporal crimes.

The centenary affairMysteries are made up of three sections: Incident, Reasoning and Solution. The player will observe the events leading up to each murder in Incident, gather clues, theories and hypotheses in Reasoning, and finally present their accusation in Solution. By solving these cold cases, Kagami may be able to break the chain of murders that seems to grip the ill-fated Shijima line. This all sounds very intriguing and quite exciting, I’m glad we don’t have too long to wait before we can all put on our Jessica Fletcher.

The Centenary Case: A Shijima Story launches May 12 on PlayStation, PC and Nintendo Switch.
