If you hear the drip or spring bouncing from a nearby enemy, chances are you’ve encountered a slime. Known by many names – like Chuchu Jelly in Zelda or Flan in Final Fantasy – slimes have long served as the loyal punching bags of video game heroes everywhere. Whether in the caves of Stardew Valleyor on the vast plains of Dragon Quest 11gelatinous grunts seem to have their place in many video game environments.
Slimes come in many different forms: goo, jelly, gel, etc. But what makes a solid slime? If we were to throw all those piles of goop into a colosseum and have them face off in battle royale fashion, what slime would prevail over everything? We know slimes are fools for warriors like Link or dragon quest‘s Hero, but what if they had to fight against each other?
We asked polymer chemist Dr. Marc Hilmyer, McKnight Presidential Chair in the University of Minnesota’s Department of Chemistry and editor of the scientific journal Macromolecules, about which slime would win in a fight. Since it’s common for games to have different variants of slime, such as electric slime or fire slime, we’ve generally taken the standard slimes from each game – except where scientific interest merited further discussion. Here’s which slime would win.
Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Dragon Quest’s slimes look silly, but Hilmyer thinks we should take them more seriously. Taking the crown of the strongest slime are the Dragon Quest Slimes. Hilmyer said they look like they could be what he called “dual-network hydrogels.” He observed Hero popping the Slime and said, “A lot of hydrogels are easy to tear, but these people are pretty tough.”
Dragon Quest Slimes are able to bounce back after many sword strikes. However, what really sold the Chemist on the Dragon Quest Slimes was that they can fuse into a larger King Slime. “In our world, you would call it self-healing material. Yeah, that would be pretty powerful.

slime breeder
We don’t really fight slimes in Slime Farmer; we aspire to them. “I would watch out for those because they seem like they can change direction quickly,” Hilmyer said. There’s all kinds of mud in slime breeder, but many have tiny, wing-like appendages that allow the creatures to fly and react to the environment. “In the polymer world, you might call these types of sludges ‘stimuli-responsive’ or ‘active materials’.” In addition, these slimes eat food, which probably indicates a more complex chemical process. He said: “They may have some kind of chemical reaction that allows them to have that mobility, but then they have to be refueled.” Overall they make for a sophisticated and tough slime.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Chuchu jelly in Wind Waker have full bodies where they kind of wobble on half-shaped legs. “He has good adhesive qualities there. The others jump and don’t stick much,” Hilmyer said. “These look quite different. He described these as looking “pretty strong”, but also wasn’t sure if the Chuchu jellies in Wind Waker counted as mud. For him, it seemed a little too complicated: a pure slime wouldn’t look like that. So, although they look tough, they might not be considered mud.

Stardew Valley
Loot the caves of Stardew Valley will put you in contact with powerful and aggressive slimes. This makes them a bit more fearsome. However, beyond that, they also poison your character, causing them to slow down to a point. Hilmyer said when polymers are made, they’re made with plastic molecules, but you put them together in water with another reactant. “Maybe there’s another reagent here, like a boron-containing reagent that gives you a little trouble if you get hit by one of them.” Overall, it’s toxic slime with a powerful attack mode.

terrariums
In terrariums, the general slime looks rather dumb. During the day, the slimes will kind of bounce around. However, some slimes in this game can shoot you. This phenomenon perplexed Hilmyer: “I don’t know anything about this slime. This slime has special abilities. Dr. Hilmyer asked if the slime’s ability to shoot made it stronger. “I don’t know. This is the hardest question I’ve been asked as a polymer scientist. I’m not entirely sure. As far as the scientific process and the lack of evidence conclusive, I just put this slime firmly in the middle.

Minecraft
the Minecraft slime presents a curious case. Like everything in his blocky world, the slime also takes on a cubic shape, which makes it unlike any slime. But does that make him stronger? Hilmyer is convinced not. “These don’t seem so vicious to me. First of all, they’re not that believable. And second, they seem to easily lose pieces of themselves. This puts Minecraft slime at the lower end of the monster rankings.

Fans of the famous MMORPG maple story might be a little disappointed with this particular entry. These slimes are just standard droplets that jump around aimlessly. (And there are a lot of them.) “They look a little dry. They look like small droplets. Hilmyer said: “One of the things about slimes that gives them integrity is the amount of water versus the amount of polymer in there. Some of them that seemed to be stronger seem to have more polymer. These seem pretty weak to me. I do not like it. They are weak and would likely be shot in the mud coliseum.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Turns out Link has it easy. According to Hilmyer, there is clearly a loser among the peloton – it is the Chuchus of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I showed him a clip of Link fighting a blue Chuchu and he noted that the slime seemed to burst with relative ease. “It struck me as very low polymer, very high water content. They won’t be that hard.” For him, the overall composition puts these muds solidly at the bottom of this list.
