Fans of the Parasol Protectorate, I have a special treat for you today. I have the face of Alexia Tarabotti herself, Donna Ricci, here to give some reviews and comments on the Parasol Protectorate cover finalists. We’ve talked about Donna’s role in the covers before, but I love talking about the great cast of these covers. Donna is the owner of Mechanical sewing, which I believe has the best selection of Steampunk clothing and accessories on the web. She is also a professional modela writer on steampunk fashion, and a champion of beasts great and small. I can’t think of a more suitable person to be our Alexia. And as an added treat, I’m going to post the images below that became our Parasol Protectorate covers, before and after I did all the Photoshop magic to them. You will see that Donna needs very little touch-up!

Before I hand it over, though, I just want to update you guys. We’ll keep voting open all weekend, and I’ll tally the votes on Monday (after my first coffee, at least) and announce the winner. N0w remember guys, one vote per email address please… that means you Doubtless Mom! haha.

Ok, here are the original images of Donna, alongside the cover images without the text, as a bit of an “evolution” cover shot:

Alright, now back to the finalist covers:

CARELESS: The first thing that comes to mind when I see this is “Ivy”. The drama, the color and the HAT. I can say that putting this outfit together took a lot of thought and so I have to applaud the brave young lady who carried this “tacky in the best possible way” ode to Miss Hisselpenny.

NO DOUBT: I expect to find this young rogue roaming the streets of London, begging for food, picking the locks of booze cellars and doing other useless things. Believable? Yes. Reliable? Not with a penny, uh, a farthing. This Citizen of Dickens brings his character to life with a gear-covered eyepatch and travel papers in his pocket letting me know he’s not entirely from HERE.

PRICELESS: Truly an apt title. The sculptural stance and layered skirts tell me she’s a lady of education. Her tweed coat and hat are signs that she is unconventional at best and bored of society balls. The red hair and fair skin tell me she is definitely Connall’s offspring, perhaps the last of his human relations. Or maybe that bustle is just hiding where a tail might be.

OUT OF BREATH: A little confusing. A good topper tells me she’s a fairly well off lady, but no girl worth her weight would be caught carrying her own drink. Instead of going slaying and ripping this up, I realize I should be looking at this character for the fun giveaway. She is crazy. Perhaps inspired by the Mrs. Haversham. It’s not that she can’t afford staff, it’s that she’s too distracted to hire them. Spending time with her father in his office tinkering with inventions rather than learning embroidery with her mother and sisters, she simply doesn’t see the point of a lady being served when she is perfectly capable of it.

SANS RÊVE: It’s cute, quirky, fun and eye-catching. If this was the flyer for a CURE concert, I’m all for it. Nothing about it tells me it belongs in Alexia’s world. I like feminine and neutral aspects. A nod perhaps to Madame Lefoux?

BOUNTILESS: For the excitement alone, I love it. Really. While I can’t see Gail writing in Boba Fett, I can see where the Parasol universe would need bounty hunters for rogue supernaturals. Pin stripes behind the chest plate bring another level of color and contrast to this layered set and place it on top.

Thanks Alexia, ehrm, I mean Donna! Now let’s talk about corset size, I think I need to start imagining myself for the Orbit desk! And next Halloween, maybe I’ll dress up as Alexia!
