Resident Evil 2 Remake vs PS1 original – comparing the reboot’s best bits to the survival horror classic

cre: Resident Evil 2 Remake vs PS1 original – comparing the reboot’s best bits to the survival horror classic

Capcom’s Raccoon City redux is a rotting delight, as you’ll see in our Resident Evil 2 Remake review. But how faithful is it to the PS1 masterpiece?

The video below compares some of the original’s most memorable moments with the remake’s revamped storylines, including the alligator fight, battles with William Birkin, and everyone’s favorite undead stalker, MX.

The Alligator

In the original Resi 2, the encounter with the giant alligator ends in a flash. As the beast corners Leon in a cramped sewer, you trick him into following the cop before popping his upper jaw out by shooting a fuel canister the mutated reptile just mocked. How very Jaws.

The Remake dramatically improves the sewage spectacle. Chasing Leon through waist-deep water, Kennedy must dodge piles of trash to keep clear of the alligator’s colossal gnashers. Following this Crash Bandicoot aping sprint, Leon pulls on a large fuel pipe that the beast is trying to chew through. Cue all the flying alligator pieces.

Mr X

Mr. X has certainly increased his work rate over the years. In the original PS1 smash, the Tyrant trenchcoat appears at set, sociopathic intervals during Claire’s first storyline. Breaking down walls and generally encroaching on Redfield’s personal space in more lethal style, he is a stalking threat at times.

Fast forward to the remake, and Mr. X is now such a committed killer that he makes the Terminator look like a stoned cyborg slacker. The T-00 makes its first appearance crushing the skull of an imprisoned journalist like a bruised banana, then launches a helicopter to properly introduce itself.

Unlike the original, X can move between rooms, even those with typewriter save points. The T-Virus monster is such a skilled pursuer that it nearly hunts down the titular Xenomorph of Alien Isolation.

Oh, and the new model also bought an eye-catching hat.

The beginnings of the Licker

The introduction of the Licker in the remake is much more discreet than the PS1 classic. In the 32-bit spook ’em’ up, a disturbing hallway encounter begins with Leon tiptoeing through blood and broken glass, ending with an FMV where the skinless beast enslaves and stalks the rookie cop. from the ceiling above; his Freddie Krueger tongue whipping the whole time.

As for the remake, the Licker is introduced in real time, not a cutscene. Quickly passing a rain-lashed window, he finally shows up just outside the STARS office of the police station. As you approach the room where Albert Wesker has deposited so many diabolical documents, the Licker locks its tongue around a corpse, pulling it towards the ceiling like the bastard barnacles of Half-Life 2.

Taking around four or five shotgun rounds to kill, the Remake’s slobbery hog is much harder to put down than its PS1 counterpart. Still, the wheezing of the original monster is far scarier than any sound made by the new abomination.

Fight Birkin

The remake stays pretty true to the original when it comes to portraying doomed doctor William Birkin. Both have encounters where he swings a pipe at the hero, they contain cutscenes where he is riddled with bullets and then rises from the grave of the G-Virus, while Remake and the original see old Willie mutate into a big puddle. of mutated flesh in the back of a train.

A key difference? Birkin breaks into the prison to eliminate the reporter in the original, while Mr. X does the skull-crushing act in the remake.

The role of Ada Wong

First sleazy encounter in an underground parking lot full of undead Dobermans? Check. Brief cameo loaded with enigmas? Recheck. An untimely death (sort of) via Annette Birkin’s bullets and a big old fall? Check cubed.

Ada is just as mysterious in both the original and Remake, though her playable section is a bit longer in the current-gen reboot – pushing crates is also replaced by gimmick-powering switches sophisticated x-ray.

Despite sharing a tragic “end” with Leon in the 1998 and 2019 versions of Resi 2, Ada thankfully appears in the last two boss fights of Scenario A to throw the fresh-faced po-po a rocket launcher.

Meeting in the cable car

One area where the original is actually much scarier than the remake is the cable car encounter. In the PS1 title, a mutated Birkin attempts to confuse Leon and Ada as he rips the car apart with his Wolverine-shaming claws.

But the remake? In Scenario A de Leon, the couple simply share a little kiss, with no romance-ruining bullies in sight.
