Cover Launch: EAT, SLAY, LOVE by Jesse Petersen Lauren Panepinto December 1, 2010

cre: Cover Launch: EAT, SLAY, LOVE by Jesse Petersen Lauren Panepinto December 1, 2010 Ok, definitely my favorite title winner this year is Eat, kill, love by Jesse Petersen, the third book in the Zombie Therapy series. These books are incredibly fun, and I think the covers show it. When I was designing the first two books, Married to Zombies and flip that zombie I was definitely going for a bit of a parody of self-help books rolled up in a Shaun of the dead kind of aesthetic, all in punk on chick lit up a bit. The genius of this one is all in the title. Come on, you can’t not laugh, just a little… In other zombie related news, Married to Zombies is up for “Most Unique Cover” at the 2010 All Things Urban Fantasy Cover Awards. And Jesse Petersen did great recaps of The Walking Dead on AMC every Monday after the show on Sunday night. Here’s a little teaser… “I’m not really in the mood for shopping.” Dave stopped halfway to open the bottom of the cargo hold and stared at me. ...

The Evil Within: Could it be Gaming’s “The Evil Dead”?

Image
cre: The Evil Within: Could it be Gaming’s “The Evil Dead”? P op quiz question: What do you get when you combine Shinji Mikami, the man who brought us Resident Evil – the game that defined survival horror – with id Software’s new id Tech Engine 5 (and remember there was a time when the developer was undefeated when it came to graphics engine) and support from Elder Scrolls developer Bethesda Softworks? You get a horror game full of monstrous, psychological storylines and vicious demons gnawing through a world with no rhyme or reason. In short, you return the man who defined and redefined horror, and give him a new set of tools to play with. Joyful. In many ways, The Evil Within reminds me of the recent remake of The Evil Dead – and no, not just in name. Set aside the fact that the original was (and continues to be) better. The Evil Dead looked at the original’s defining demonic mythos, decided to “go to hell,” and proceeded to deliver some of the most unsettling, gory, gruesome,...

Battlefield 5’s Combined Arms co-op mode is a waste of everyone’s time

Image
cre: Battlefield 5’s Combined Arms co-op mode is a waste of everyone’s time As I trudged through various missions in Battlefield 5’s new co-op mode, Combined Arms, I couldn’t help but wonder if DICE’s time could have been better spent elsewhere. Months after its release, DICE continues to slowly but surely build the Battlefield 5 it launched in May of last year during the game’s reveal event. WW2 shooting ranges are decreasing and its content is expanding. This week’s patch introduced Combined Arms, a four-player co-op mode spanning four maps and four different scenarios – a total of eight variants so far. It’s hard to imagine the heart of the Battlefield community getting excited about a co-op mode – before Combined Arms, Battlefield games featured co-op modes exactly twice – but here we are. The first was a wave-based console-only mode in Bad Company 2. I’ve never played it, so I don’t have an opinion one way or the other. Then there are the cooperative missions of Battlefi...

Silver Chains review – Chain of ghouls

Image
cre: Silver Chains review – Chain of ghouls There are certain rules when it comes to creating horror games. When in doubt, set up your game in a dilapidated, haunted mansion. Put ghosts in it. Maybe a possessed puppet. Don’t forget the jumpscares! silver chains does all this in its short runtime. But is it a scary experience? Or is it a well the developers shouldn’t have tried to draw water from? haunt me silver chains tells the story of a man named Pierre. It begins with him waking up outside a mansion he doesn’t recognize and can’t remember how he got there. Peter doesn’t remember most things, because he’s an idiot. Don’t be like Peter. Before he can figure out what he’s doing there, he passes out and wakes up inside the mansion. Once inside, it’s up to him to piece together what happened and figure out what all this mess has to do with him while dodging spirits and collecting journal pages. The game is very narrative but isn’t a walking simulator, and that story is pretty d...

Review: Zanki Zero: Last Beginning

cre: Review: Zanki Zero: Last Beginning Each additional extension “What will you do after the end of the world? This is perhaps the most resolved question in contemporary gaming history, so the medium is rich with stories set after the collapse of civilization as we know it. Beyond being a convenient escape hatch from the restrictions of law and norm that govern human society, the post-apocalypse can be a space to ask and answer questions whose answers would be unnecessary or obvious in any other situation. It is in this rather crowded niche that Danganronpa former Yoshinori Terasawa and Takayuki Sugawara launch their latest effort: Zanki Zero: Last Beginning , a survival-themed adventure that takes place right after the ending. Their answer to the question above? “Get to the bottom of it, die a lot along the way, and drag all of our luggage with us.” Zanki Zero: Last Beginning (PS4 [reviewed]pc) Developer: Spike Chunsoft Publisher: Spike Chunsoft Released: April 9, 2019 ...
