If you are used to wandering the world of Pokemon and fight random trainers to level up, maybe readjust them to farm XP, then Pokemon Legends: Arceus will be a rude awakening. Your whole party still benefits from the XP earned from battles and such, but with very few trainers – who can’t be rematched, of course – and no Gyms, how do you level up quickly?

One method is to buy Exp. Bonn Sweets at Jubilife Village. While it can be quite expensive, it’s possible if you farm valuable items from space-time warps (more on that here) and sell them for Pokedollars. It’s only good for upgrading Pokemon one at a time, so be warned.

You can also venture into Massive Outbreaks, which are phenomena where multiple Pokémon of the same species will appear together. In Jubilife Village, you will be notified by Galaxy Team security of a mass outbreak and told where it is. Multiple outbreaks can occur at once, so it’s a matter of deciding which species you want to tackle. Along with being a great way to grind Shiny Pokemon (especially if you max out the Research Level – more on that below), the sheer number of Pokemon available to catch provides tons of XP for your party.

Finally, there are the Alpha Pokémon. By defeating them, you will receive Exp. Sweets, but be aware that they are hard. It is recommended that you increase your Star Rank in each area – once you reach Star Rank 3 or higher, you can take on Pokémon Alpha Challenges. As for which ones to fight, try tackling Alpha Chansey (located east of Oreburrow Tunnel in the Obsidian Fields) and Alpha Blissey (northeast of Obsidian Falls in the same area) as they apparently drop extra Exp. Candies.

How to increase the wanted level

Research tasks are at the heart of Pokemon Legends: Arceus. They are important for filling your Pokedex and also responsible for increasing your Wanted Level. The research tasks themselves range from catching and battling Pokemon a certain number of times to seeing them use moves a certain number of times (whether for or against you). Each Pokémon has its own research tasks and can get quite wild.

Once the research tasks have been completed, report to Professor Laventon when you return from the expeditions. It will calculate everything you’ve done, provide research points, and ultimately help increase your star rank. Given how important Star Rank is to hunting Alpha Pokémon, you’ll want to increase it regularly.

So where do research levels come from? As you complete Research tasks for each Pokémon, you’ll see a number indicating its Research Level in the bottom right. Once Research Level 10 is reached, that Pokedex entry is considered complete. As such, you don’t need to do all of the research tasks to reach level 10, so pursue the ones you’re most comfortable with.

Some side quests require you to have a certain research level for certain Pokémon, which gives more incentive to increase it. However, if you are really dedicated, completing all research tasks will bring a very good benefit – an increased chance of encountering Shiny Pokemon. Admittedly, this can only really benefit the most hardcore gamers, but it’s still a great bonus.
