There is one just below and it leads to The Deep. It’s a fairly small area, but it’s also where you’ll encounter the game’s final boss. Here’s our guide to help you with The Deep and the final boss fight in Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights . To note: For more information see our Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights guides and features hub. Remember that this guide contains spoilers. cre: Cover Launch: MR. SHIVERS Lauren Panepinto July 6, 2010 With a new look for his first paperback, here is Mr. Chills by Robert Jackson Bennett. If you’ve read these cover articles, you know I like to take the opportunity to revisit art when there’s a format change…it’s especially fun to take a new look at a book and an art you already love, and just shake it up a bit. If you caught Mr. Chills in hardcover, you will recognize the hobo symbol of Mr. Shivers himself which now occupies the front and center of the cover. You can also learn more about the book and the hobo symbols at www.mistershivers.com. Mr. Chills is an excellent read of historical fiction, suspense and horror. and my favorite review ( The Editor’s Weekly star-studded review) of the book says it all for me: “…like a collaboration between Steven King and John Stienbeck.” Uh, how so not sounds awesome? Here is a description for you: This is the time of the Great Depression. Thousands of people have left th...

cre: Wallpaper: THE UNIT Lauren Panepinto July 13, 2010 Here is a brand new wallpaper for a brand new version of Orbit: unit by Terry DeHart. This after-the-bomb novel is a fascinating look at the lengths a family will go to to survive a disaster. Plus, the author is a former Marine and a NASA security analyst, so the book is awfully plausible. The art was a collaboration between fabulous designer Chad Roberts and myself, though he gets all the credit for the militaristic type and scary distressed explosions. Duck and Cover! The Unit is here… The Orbit Team July 14, 2010

Image
cre: Duck and Cover! The Unit is here… The Orbit Team July 14, 2010 When the manuscript that eventually became THE UNIT landed on my desk, I was a little skeptical. I’m a big fan of post-apocalyptic fiction but after reading recently The road and play Fallout 3 more than strictly sane, I wasn’t sure I was ready for the exhausting, depressing grind of yet another end-times story. Oh, how wrong I was… THE UNIT is the post-apocalyptic story that I didn’t realize I was waiting for. Unshakable, honest, brutal, tender and, above all, human, the beginnings of Terry DeHart floored me from the first reading. It’s not that it’s not dark. It’s not that horrible things don’t happen to the right people. But it does what so many post-apocalyptic stories fail to do, it reminds us of the essential humanity of each actor in the story. A colleague of mine immediately identified it as “hey, that’s like The road if they ever retaliated,” which, beyond flippancy, was exactly what I felt Cormac McC...

Review: Golf Peaks

Image
cre: Review: Golf Peaks What’s that peanut guy? Golf is a very deceptive sport. While many people will lament how “boring” it is, they only watch it from a viewer’s perspective. In fact, picking up a club and hitting a ball will show you how much technique is needed to perfect your shot. You need to understand the weight of your equipment, the arc of your shots, the wind resistance of the course, and consider the shapes of the greens. It can sometimes look like a giant puzzle. That’s what makes a game like Golf Summits feel so natural. It’s such an obvious idea, it’s a real surprise that it hasn’t happened before. Golf requires careful thought and planning, so why not mix that up with a puzzle game? While you may lose all club selection and technique execution, what you gain is a title that captures the essence of golf in bite-sized chunks anyone can. to dig. Resident Evil 2 Remake vs PS1 original – comparing the reboot’s best bits to the survival horror classic

Image
cre: Resident Evil 2 Remake vs PS1 original – comparing the reboot’s best bits to the survival horror classic Capcom’s Raccoon City redux is a rotting delight, as you’ll see in our Resident Evil 2 Remake review. But how faithful is it to the PS1 masterpiece? The video below compares some of the original’s most memorable moments with the remake’s revamped storylines, including the alligator fight, battles with William Birkin, and everyone’s favorite undead stalker, MX. Watch on YouTube The Alligator In the original Resi 2, the encounter with the giant alligator ends in a flash. As the beast corners Leon in a cramped sewer, you trick him into following the cop before popping his upper jaw out by shooting a fuel canister the mutated reptile just mocked. How very Jaws. The Remake dramatically improves the sewage spectacle. Chasing Leon through waist-deep water, Kennedy must dodge piles of trash to keep clear of the alligator’s colossal gnashers. Review: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Echo Review

Image
cre: Echo Review Echo on PS4 Should I play stealth, sneaking back and forth to sneak past enemies while suffocating a few that block my path, or blaze weapons? Picking a certain style of play has always been my dilemma in stealth action games that give players the choice to approach every situation. To my surprise, Echo balances this mechanic perfectly by giving you the most dangerous enemy: yourself. In Echo, you fight against enemies that have the appearance and traits of the protagonist En. Additionally, each enemy learns certain abilities that you perform through their breakdown cycle mechanic. When the lights are on, the palace records all actions performed by En. Break someone’s head with a drink? Strangled someone to death? Did you fire your gun? Good luck. You just taught them some dangerous moves. Once the palace systems have restarted, every enemy will know how to hit your head with a drink, choke you to death, and shoot you. Every enemy killed in the previous breakdown...

Image
cre: The Black Prism – First Reviews Alex Lencicki August 19, 2010 THE BLACK PRISM will be released worldwide in less than a week, but we have some early reviews coming up that we had to share. At Fantasy Book Critic Liviu writes: “The Black Prism is an A++ from me as the series has the potential to become one for the ages. The main flaw of The Black Prism is that it ends – despite being over 600 pages and a reasonable endpoint , I still wanted at least 600 more! (After) And at Grasping for the Wind, John Ottinger writes: “It’s a truly visionary and original work, which set the bar very high for others in its subgenre.” (After) Brent Weeks will be touring the US starting on the 25th (full tour schedule here) but he did a pre-release video tour online. Today he stopped by Janicu’s book blog to talk about his love of magic (the gathering!) and how many books we can expect in the Lightbringer series. Next week it will be on thebooksmugglers.com – so stay tuned! source: gamepla...

The Chart of Fantasy Art Part 4: Title Trends and Fonts The Orbit Team August 19, 2010

Image
cre: The Chart of Fantasy Art Part 4: Title Trends and Fonts The Orbit Team August 19, 2010 Each year we ask our summer intern to do a survey of the cover elements of the best American fantasy novels published the previous year. You can find more of our findings on the fantasy art board, the evolution of urban fantasy heroine fashion, and color trends in dragons. Today we’re looking at book titles – both what titles say AND what they look like. Note: the words have been generalized to one form, so for example “death” and “death” and “mortal” all count in “death”. First, let’s look at the contents fantastic titles from 2009. This was a new category of survey for us this year and many surprises awaited us once the data was collected and analyzed. In the table above the size of the word is proportional to the number of books on which it appears in the title (no subtitles or series titles this time). As you can see, there are some fairly predictable words in heaviest usage: “Drag...

Netflix live-action Resident Evil teaser has zombies, chainsaws, and a teddy bear hologram

Today Netflix released the official live-action teaser resident Evil series and there are zombies. He has chainsaws. There is also a bear hologram. “Nothing big ever happens in peaceful New Raccoon City,” reads the video’s description. The series seemingly follows two timelines, surrounding the outbreak and the ramifications of a bioweapons disaster. In the teaser, we can see this flip happen, as we see the time and location jump mid-stream. It all seems like a bit more general zombie movie with some resident Evil sprinkled flavor. You can spot some references like Umbrella, and of course an angry undead dog. ...

Review: Yoshi’s Crafted World

Image
cre: Review: Yoshi’s Crafted World Cut paper? yoshi is one of those franchises that are struggling to find their place in the modern world. It’s somewhere between Kirby and mario : a midpoint of a completely entry-level platform experience and a more standardized experience. The series has also only hosted three mainline games in 13 years, as Nintendo seems mostly content to relegate Yoshi to sidekick status. For the most part, that’s fine with me. Yoshi’s craft world (To change) Developer: Good Feel Publisher: Nintendo Release date: March 29, 2019 MSRP: $59.99 If you wait craft world fall apart on its own yoshi barriers and transcend the skies in the pantheon of platformers, returning the series to the resplendent era of the original Yoshi’s Island , just walk away. Rat-a-tat-tat! The Orbit Team September 9, 2010

Image
cre: Rat-a-tat-tat! The Orbit Team September 9, 2010 Another great prize has come and gone, and I’d like to congratulate all of the Orbit authors who won or were nominated. It’s great for them because, while being an author is a wonderful job, it can also be discouraging. Unless you’re in the rewards sphere, or manage to work your way up one of the increasingly elusive lists, it’s hard to know if you’re really reaching someone. This is why social media is rocking. In the Popular Fiction MA at my new university, I teach a course on building author platforms, and we talk a lot about social media. One of the things we raised on the periphery is how rewarding it is to interact with fans of our books. This weekend, I received lovely letters and messages on Twitter and Facebook. It’s almost impossible for me to express how much these interactions mean to writers like me. I feel very disconnected, sometimes, from my life as a writer. So to see people not just reading my books, but reall...

Fe Review – The Pace of Nature

Image
cre: Fe Review – The Pace of Nature J here’s something utterly seductive about ambiguity, especially in video games. I’m not talking about games where the solution or story isn’t entirely obvious, but ones that force you to uncover the mystery of something deeper. Maybe that deeper meaning exists and maybe it’s something you do for yourself. Ambiguity can be used to varying degrees, and it has created some of the best story and gameplay experiences in recent years. However, dealing with ambiguity is not easy. Whether you use small pinches or whole spoonfuls, the process can backfire, leaving someone confused for confusion’s sake. The effect isn’t entirely ugly – it’s just there, slipping into its own bizarre universe with little regard for engrossing playtime. “ Fe doesn’t care entirely about explaining everything, taking a minimalist approach to its storytelling and a silent approach to dialogue.” Zoink’s Fe is an interesting game, which flirts with ambiguity without fully comm...
