Cover launch: ANGEL OF STORMS by Trudi Canavan Anna Jackson June 19, 2015

cre: Cover launch: ANGEL OF STORMS by Trudi Canavan Anna Jackson June 19, 2015 Last month we released the THIEF’S MAGIC paperback edition of issue 1 Sunday time bestselling author Trudi Canavan. It’s the first book in a brand new fantasy series called Millennium’s Rule – and judging by the fantastic reader reviews, it’s going really well! We can now reveal the cover of the second book in the Millennium’s Rule series – ANGEL OF STORMS – which will be released in November. We think it looks stunning – if we do say so ourselves! – and we think it really captures the sense of adventure and mystery that makes this series so exciting. The illustration shows the character of Rielle, who will be taken on a breathtaking journey in this book – by the Angel of Storms himself. Meanwhile, Tyen, now a professor of mechanical magic, will learn that the fearsome ruler of all worlds, long believed to be dead, has returned and is enforcing his ancient laws. . . Whether you’re already a fan of Tr...

Cover Launch: SKYBORN by David Dalglish The Orbit Team June 23, 2015

Image
cre: Cover Launch: SKYBORN by David Dalglish The Orbit Team June 23, 2015 I had the chance to direct David’s first series, the Shadowdance novels, so when I heard we were ready to work on his next series, I was super excited. SKYBORN (US | UK | AUS) is about the Seraphim, an elite military force protecting a floating island of Weshern. Seraphim guard the remnants of humanity, defying gravity with ancient wings and harnessing powerful elements to wage war in the skies. The new series was a different design challenge from the Shadowdance books in that we wanted to convey a different feel for the cover. In David’s first series, we wanted to emphasize the main character, a ninja-like assassin, and the energetic action of the books. In born from the sky , the characters are a bit more unique in that they have metal wings to fly, wield swords, and wear military uniforms. Ultimately, the new series had to convey a great adventure. In what I would call fortuitous timing, Tommy Arnold’s w...

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II Review

Image
cre: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II Review The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II on PlayStation 4 If you ask any hardcore modern JRPG fan who makes the best games in the genre today, they’ll offer you a short list of developers, which will no doubt include Atlus and Square Enix. Keep scrolling through this hypothetical list, though, and you’ll likely find one of the Trails games, a criminally underplayed (genre veterans aside) series of staggeringly good quality from Nihon Falcom. Similar to how the Persona series was before it exploded with Persona 4: Golden, it still seems like the Trails games are just one big outlet to break into the mainstream. Unfortunately, I don’t think that will happen with the Cold Steel Trilogy, simply due to the time it takes for the player to get up to speed. Set on the politically complex continent of Erebonia, it follows a group of students enrolled in Thors Academy, a prestigious graduation school for military cadets. Assig...

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order interview – how Respawn integrated exploration into a combat-first lightsaber game

Image
cre: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order interview – how Respawn integrated exploration into a combat-first lightsaber game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order isn’t just a simple melee action game, but instead features open planets filled with secrets and Metroid-style exploration. Here are some people from Respawn explaining how it happened. Jedi: Fallen Order isn’t exactly the obvious movie franchise spin-off game you’d expect. It would be easy to make another Star Wars action game where you fight your way through linear levels as a super-powered Jedi – but developer Respawn aims to do something different with this game. Those differences were pleasingly surprising, as detailed in our extensive hands-on impressions of Fallen Order – including a map and world design that seems to owe at least a bit to Metroid, puzzles that could have been in Tomb Raider, and even a death mechanic that closely resembles to the Soulsborne Bonfire system. After our hands-on, we had the opportunity to sit dow...

cre: Cover Launch for WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE: A NOVEL Jenni Hill July 24, 2015 The creators of the hugely popular WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE podcast present an imaginative mystery of appearances and disappearances that is a poignant look at how we all struggle to find ourselves – no matter where we live. WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE: A NOVEL will be released on October 20 in hardback, audio and ebook formats, but you can pre-order your copy now. We are delighted to launch the UK and Australian cover today, beautifully illustrated by Robert Wilson , designer of the original Night Vale logo. We asked Rob to tell us a bit about the project: “I have been involved with WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE since its inception, when Jeffrey Cranor asked me to design the original podcast icon. The writers and I worked together to create a simple and mysterious image that would convey the atmosphere of the show , without revealing any of its secrets. Years later, I’m amazed how the graphic has taken on a life of its...

Warframe’s Next Expansion Announced, Releases Later This Year

Image
cre: Warframe’s Next Expansion Announced, Releases Later This Year Free Action RPG Warframe has finally received its long-awaited expansion The new war Last year. However, as is often the case, that was just the beginning and Digital Extremes are currently working on the next big thing. In his recent Devstream he confirmed that the next expansion is Zariman’s Angels which would be released “soon”. It remains to be seen how soon “soon” but it is confirmed to be part of the 31.5 update. Zariman’s Angels will add a new quest, Warframe, and “at least two” new game modes to mix and match. Story details are lacking, but the Zariman played a pivotal role in the story as the vessel the Tenno traveled on (which later exposed them to the Void and granted them their powers). Before that, Digital Extremes will release update 31.1″ Echoes of War .” This allows you to replay The new war and rediscover its story missions. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months. Grinding in Games: Do We Need Loot to Have Fun?

Image
cre: Grinding in Games: Do We Need Loot to Have Fun? I have a few friends (shockingly, I know) who have very interesting taste in games. No, not visual novels and their ilk. One of those friends doesn’t like games like Borderlands or Diablo. While plenty of debate gave reasons such as not liking the former’s art style or not being drawn to the latter’s isometric perspective, it was interesting to see how both games are essentially loot-based. It was even more interesting to watch him play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. He never went out and tried to explore every inch of the world and collect every piece of Witcher gear there. On the contrary, he chose to live the story first. The Witcher 3 is by no means a game with grinding – in fact, one could argue with its leveling system and the amount of experience doled out in side quests and fighting enemies it actively discourages. The thing is, this friend is someone who’s been playing for years and while he’s not spending hours and hours loo...

Review: Neon City Riders

Image
cre: Review: Neon City Riders Neon City is about to EXPLODE It’s the year 2075 and all is not well under the ultraviolet lights of Neon City. Following the Android revolution, which resulted in a civil war and the destruction of thousands of automatons, the bustling cyber-metropolis and its surroundings are thrown into deep disarray. Taking advantage of the dark aftermath of this conflict, brutal gangs have carved out what’s left of the ‘berg for themselves, with each gang leader taking a piece of Neon City’s miserable waste and making it their own territory. With humans and mutants fearing for their lives, and the remnants of the android population living miserably in the shadows, Neon City has become a buzzing hive of criminal activity. And it seems that no one dares – or is able – to put an end to it. Our boy Rick, a young vigilante who decided he was mad as hell, and he won’t take it anymore, crashes into this tale of the dark future. Slipping in a denim war vest like I rocked...

The Bradwell Conspiracy review: Devastatingly charming

Image
cre: The Bradwell Conspiracy review: Devastatingly charming What do you get when you mix a first-person puzzle game, a dystopian tale of an evil society, and a star-studded cast of comedians? Good… Portal , of cours. But this is old news. Countless titles have attempted to capture the same magic that made Portal an instant classic, and just as many failed. There is a certain balance between endearing dialogue, narrative transparency, and engaging puzzles that have yet to be recreated. In The Bradwell Plot , however, rookie developer A Brave Plan isn’t just trying to emulate its spiritual predecessor. No, it aims to refine and perfect its formula for a new generation. But does the Bossa Studios-published title live up to its own lofty goals, or does its vocal performance surpass its gameplay? Bradwell Electronics’ facility in Amesbury is just opposite Stonehenge and offers a distinctly British distribution. Sabotage at Stonehenge In 2026, you are an anonymous attendee of Bradw...

Is Urban Fantasy Dead? Or Undead? The Orbit Team September 22, 2015

Image
cre: Is Urban Fantasy Dead? Or Undead? The Orbit Team September 22, 2015 We remember when urban fantasy first hit our shelves, but the genre has changed significantly since then. Are these stories still popular? If yes, why? We asked some of the Orbit writers for their views on the genre’s past, present, and future. Where does urban or contemporary fantasy come from? JIM BUTCHER, author of the best-selling Dresden Files, as well as the fantasy adventure novel THE AERONAUT’S WINDLASS “Urban fantasy is nothing more or less than the resurgence of fairy tales. We’ve changed the look and behavior of our big bad wolves, and our forests look somewhat different than they used to, and Little Red Riding Hood is generally much more heavily armed than it traditionally was, but we tell the same stories, in the same way, with the same emphasis on fantasy and the terror and joy of its clash with our everyday world. It’s the everyday reality that so many of us find terrifying – so much so tha...
