Sniper Elite V2 Remastered Review – ReMEHstered

cre: Sniper Elite V2 Remastered Review – ReMEHstered

Wwhen i first played Sniper V2 On the PlayStation 3 in 2012, I was wowed by the franchise’s signature bullet camera that displays snipers’ bullets piercing their fleshy targets in graphic, heart-wrenching detail. The bones cracked and countless hard-to-watch organ strokes ensued. There was a lot of fun watching those gruesome deaths, but within hours the otherwise rigid gameplay and poorly implemented mechanics weighed me down and caused me to retire the game soon enough.

Years later, a remaster that no one asked for arrived to bring the game to modern consoles, but not much has changed beyond a few improvements to the graphics. Sniper V2 wasn’t very pretty at first, and while the upgrade to 4k and HDR is a notable improvement, it doesn’t magically improve dated visuals drastically. The dynamic lighting and enhanced particle effects are welcome, and I’ve noticed some significant changes in the character models of the game. Still, the game is several years old, and it shows. Since the only other notable addition to the remastered version of Sniper V2 is an average photo mode, it’s a shame the visuals aren’t more impressive to showcase players’ best moments.

“The best feature of the game is its main one – sniping. There is a lot of attention given to this element of gameplay which works very well.”

Beyond these traditional remastering enhancements, Sniper V2 is exactly the same game as it was seven years ago. Players are placed in the shoes of Lieutenant Karl Fairburne and tasked with taking down and eliminating German scientists before Russian agents capture them. The setup is a run-of-the-mill WWII story edited just enough to make the sniper gameplay logical, and our hero follows suit by being as generic as possible. Still, there is enough intrigue here to propel players into conflict and give them the goal of shooting bullets into as many skulls as possible.

The best feature of the game is its main one – sniping. There is a lot of attention being paid to this element of gameplay which works very well. My favorite detail is that the game ties your ability to slow down time to your heart rate. Running even short distances can increase it exceptionally, and since slowdown time is so important to fielding great shots, managing the counter comes with a bit of fun risk and reward. Beyond that, you can expect to spend a lot of time adjusting drop distance and wind when lining up perfect shots.

It can be a truly mathematical endeavor that makes you feel like a real sniper as you perched on top of a crumbling building sorting out details before pulling the trigger. And thanks to the aforementioned brutal and satisfying bullet camera, many of those shots will result in grotesque slow-motion bullet entry. You don’t just watch the bullet go in and out of the body; the game will switch to x-ray vision to show the enemy’s interior and let you gaze in wonder as you explode various bone structures and organs. If you have a fragile stomach, Sniper is not a franchise for you. But if you’re intrigued by seeing a bullet go into a face and completely decimate a person’s jawbones into a thousand fragmented pieces, well, I think you might have found your game.

“You can shoot and move to a new position to let enemies search for you, but because the AI is so irregular and varies from running straight at you with reckless abandon looking endlessly to no avail, there is is not a lot of consistency to rely on. “

The rest of the game is a mix of passable gameplay mechanics and downright awful mechanics. There is the expected genre option of stealth killing via silent pistols or melee, but Sniper V2 gives you many unique ways to achieve your goals using a variety of tools and a little creativity. You can do things such as laying landmines and anti-personnel mines before luring your prey with a stone throw, shooting non-lethal shots at your enemies to lure others to their position, or shooting tanks of gasoline on vehicles to leave chaos and death in your wake. And if all else fails, you’re given dynamite, grenades, and automatic weapons as a backup for when things get hairy.

It’s a shame, however, that these backup mechanics undermine some of the best aspects of the sniper genre – true stealth. Of course, I understand that sniper fire attracts attention, but the loss of the element of surprise often turns the game into a traditional third-person shooter, especially during the second half of the game. Worse Still, the AI struggles to keep up with the game’s leap from a purposefully paced sniper experience to a frenzied shooting gallery. You can sometimes time your shots with background sounds, but the unpredictable detection of enemies means that sometimes they hear them anyway and come and charge you. Hell, sometimes they suddenly and haphazardly know precisely where you are without even moving, resulting in shockingly unfair and unexpected deaths in numbers.

You can shoot and move to a new position to let enemies search for you, but because the AI is so irregular and varies from running straight at you with reckless abandon looking endlessly to no avail, there is not a lot of consistency to rely on. More often than not, a few solid hits were all I got before enemies started to assail me and beckon me to pull out my automatic weapon for a full battle. These battles often played out in hilarious ways watching enemies staring straight at me as they fired at a nearby wall over and over again, and other times they would run in literal circles looking for me as I stood at the tall one. open to looking at them. My favorite was how often they would run to a spot and lie down facing a wall while I stood there for all to see. Of course, when they weren’t stupid, they came towards me like bats from hell and wiped me out completely.

“The solid sniper mechanics and bloody bullet camera deaths are endlessly exciting, and I had surprisingly fun at times, but going through his 8-10 hour campaign also comes with a lot of frustration.” . “

This is made worse in the simpler hallway levels which essentially require you to pull out that automatic pistol and go with guns against such finicky enemies. Don’t get me wrong – there’s nothing patently wrong about these segments, but in a game clearly designed to appeal to players who enjoy sniping, it’s a bit of a letdown when you’re forced into small alleys and forced to use an SMG or use your sniper as a shotgun, although the latter admittedly is pretty cool and made me feel badass.

The different difficulties can sometimes make things even more frustrating. The simpler mode lets you take quite a few hits before you drop, but the higher difficulty presents the absolute worst in AI and gameplay imbalances. If you can’t calculate wind and fall distance quickly and accurately, you might as well be dead before you’ve even fired a single bullet. Enemies will rain down on you and wipe the ground with your corpse before you can even think about it. It also removes some of the simpler mode options, such as the very useful aim assist and the ability to tag enemies to follow them. This all adds up to an unbalanced difficulty regardless of how you swing things, leaving more behind. Sniper V2 feeling inadequate.

The last games of the Sniper The franchise has elevated the franchise above par and made significant quality of life improvements to its core gameplay loop, so I’m disappointed the developers didn’t take that into account when remastering the game that brought more to the mainstream series. Much could have been done to do Sniper V2 stand out, but all we have here is the same clunky entry we had in 2012. The solid sniper mechanics and bloody gunshot deaths are endlessly exciting, and I had some surprisingly fun at times, but pushing through its 8- A 10 hour campaign also comes with a lot of frustration.

This game has been tested on PlayStation 4.
