Oculus Rift and HTC Vive have been released, but the most interesting device is the one still months away from release. Of course, we’re referring to PlayStation VR (the title of the article should have been indication enough). At $399, this will be the most affordable VR headset of this generation and it’s amazing on its own. You’d think Sony could just take advantage of the success of its PlayStation 4, release an affordable VR solution, and call it a day. Despite its serious efforts with the PlayStation Eye and Move, both of these devices came out pretty much “phoneing in” a year after release.

PlayStation VR seems to have a bigger plan. Although these two devices also have a plan and look how they appeared – as simple accessories to be used with the helmet. I digress however.

PlayStation VR is going to be a hit – that’s pretty much a given at this point. VR support is intriguing at this point due to the enthusiasm for Rift and Vive. Both devices have their pros and cons but they have their followers. They also have their games… don’t they?

More than the price of PlayStation VR and more than the overall PlayStation 4 install base that will pick it up, the concern rests firmly on gaming. You could argue that many VR titles released on PlayStation VR will also be heading to Rift and Vive, and we agree. And the problem doesn’t become “Why choose a PlayStation VR when you can get these games on other devices right now?”

That’s because there will be a lot of people on PS4 who don’t want to upgrade their computer and then drop several hundred more dollars on a VR headset. Whether it knows it or not, Sony is in the right place, at the right time yet again with an affordable solution for its massive install base. Certainly, companies like Strategy Analytics estimate that inexpensive mobile VR devices will account for 90% of total units sold this year. But no one has really explained the success of the PlayStation 4, so quickly.

When you think back to the success of the PlayStation 4, it’s hard not to notice a trend. In the last year or more, there haven’t been a ton of exclusives for the console. Now, we’re not going to pretend that games like Bloodborne, until dawn and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (although it’s a remastered collection, it’s still great) don’t exist. They were amazing and provided countless hours of fun for PS4 fans. However, there weren’t exactly a large amount of killer apps in this space. We don’t even indicate how many games Microsoft has released in the meantime. And in fact, there will be more exclusives with Ratchet and Clank this month and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End coming next month.

It’s the spacing between these apps that kills that’s worrisome. Virtual reality as a medium does not seem capable of supporting experiences longer than 20 hours. Sooner or later, the novelty of exploring wide open spaces in first person will wear off. Storytelling, game design, and unique gameplay will once again become the hook. Yes, everything seems unique, but what about in a year or two? Motion controller gaming looked like the future, but now almost everyone has abandoned it in the current generation.

This particularly makes skepticism towards PlayStation VR and Sony high due to its inconsistency, from releasing exclusive titles to promoting its new technologies. He can be hyped Rez Infinite, Star Wars Battlefront and what do I still know for the helmet but after? It’s not even a problem that a simple E3 presentation could solve. Rather, it’s about Sony maintaining constant communication with its audience and telling them what’s next. Kind of like what it does with the PlayStation 4. It all sounds like common sense, but then again, it’s Sony and it’s had issues with accessories in the past.

Don’t worry, the apocalypse isn’t overnight for VR headsets or for Sony’s PlayStation VR. Unlike the Move or the Eye, the PlayStation VR will be a success even before its launch. If it does follow the PS4 momentum, it could see several million units in its first quarter. It’s just that when you combine Sony’s tendency to release its exclusives after big gaps with its start-stop approach to past trends, you have to wonder if either will bode well for PlayStation VR. long-term. What if the media itself slows down? There are many possibilities.

Either way, it’ll be worth tuning in to E3 2016 to see what Sony has planned for the immediate future. His plan may not turn heads, but if he lays a solid foundation for the future of PlayStation VR, it will be enough. Sony hasn’t thrived in the console wars this long without knowing what it’s doing and it obviously has some sort of plan if it invests that much in VR. Heck, the PlayStation VR may be its most expensive “accessory” yet, bordering on a whole new platform. Even with its less than ideal reputation allowing for skepticism, there is always hope that things will turn out differently.
