After finding success with the launch of Pokemon Go, the developer of augmented reality mobile game, Niantic, is creating its own original digital pet. On Wednesday, Niantic announced Peridota new game coming to mobile devices that focuses less on catching ’em all and more on tending, breeding, and breeding unique digital creatures.

In Peridot, players will raise magical beasts called Peridots “that look real,” Ziah Fogel, the game’s lead producer, said during a press briefing earlier this week. Each Peridot is “100% unique and 100% yours,” says Niantic, differing in visual appearance, personality, likes and dislikes, and abilities. Players will breed Peridots from birth to adulthood, raise them with other Peridots in nests, and create multiple generations of their virtual pets, leading to new discoveries.

As seen in the game’s trailer above, peridots come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and patterns. They will follow real-world archetypes in their designs, which Niantic says are a mix of hand-created and procedurally-generated assets; some peridots will share traits inspired by unicorns or peacocks, while others will resemble rabbits or clownfish. Other less literal peridot archetypes revealed include concepts such as glitter, jester, metallic, and kintsugi (the Japanese art of mending broken pottery). Peridots will breed with others and, using a system modeled on real-world DNA, give rise to new breeds of Peridot.

As Pokemon Go, Hall, Pikmin Flowerand other Niantic augmented reality games, Peridot will heavily emphasize walking and exploring new places in the real world. Daily care of your peridot is also crucial to its happiness and survival. Players will have to feed, play with and raise their virtual pets. Peridots will have “wants”, meaning you may need to take them for walks, feed them a certain piece of foraged food, or visit a nearby point of interest to satisfy them.

Peridot will be played in camera-augmented reality, using Niantic’s Lightship technology. This AR technology helps peridots “recognize different real-world surfaces such as dirt, sand, water, grass, and foliage,” says Niantic, from which your pet can feed on different types of food. . Of course, taking cute photos of your Peridot pet is also a big draw to playing AR. Niantic says players will be able to easily share their Peridot photos to social media, directly from within the game.

Niantic said it plans to soft launch Peridot in select markets on the Apple App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android in April.
