Move over Wesker, there’s a new mascot in town
Video game adaptations are all the rage, and resident Evil doesn’t take a break. Today Netflix released the official live-action teaser resident Evil series and there are zombies. He has chainsaws. There is also a bear hologram.
“Nothing big ever happens in peaceful New Raccoon City,” reads the video’s description. The series seemingly follows two timelines, surrounding the outbreak and the ramifications of a bioweapons disaster. In the teaser, we can see this flip happen, as we see the time and location jump mid-stream.
It all seems like a bit more general zombie movie with some resident Evil sprinkled flavor. You can spot some references like Umbrella, and of course an angry undead dog. But I’m also a bit curious about how much resident Evil lore we will cut.
under the umbrella
To be fair, resident Evil has had success in the past when it has been loosely adapted. There has also just been a series of recent and very faithful resident Evil adaptations to directly compare Netflix efforts.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is the most recent live-action effort, and it hasn’t exactly set the world on fire. Netflix itself brought another resident Evil series, Infinite Darkness, in his service last year too. This one was CGI though, and followed Leon and Claire to a horror festival in Washington DC.
Netflix live action resident Evil The show’s ace in the hole might be its casting. The production even has Lance Reddick taking over for Wesker. And maybe this two-stroke thing works well. Don’t trust the giant talking teddy bear hologram.
I’m interested to see where this adaptation takes resident Evil. At the end of the day a large mega-corporation begins an outbreak of zombies is a big enough frame to work with. But the lukewarm reception of the Halo series gives me just the slightest of pauses. We’ll see what Netflix has in store on July 14.
