Review: Yoshi’s Crafted World

cre: Review: Yoshi’s Crafted World

Cut paper?

yoshi is one of those franchises that are struggling to find their place in the modern world. It’s somewhere between Kirby and mario: a midpoint of a completely entry-level platform experience and a more standardized experience.

The series has also only hosted three mainline games in 13 years, as Nintendo seems mostly content to relegate Yoshi to sidekick status. For the most part, that’s fine with me.

Yoshi’s craft world (To change)

If you wait craft world fall apart on its own yoshi barriers and transcend the skies in the pantheon of platformers, returning the series to the resplendent era of the original Yoshi’s Island, just walk away. This is a cute, very co-op oriented game where you can wear cardboard boxes as outfits and fight stop-motion enemies. That said, it’s more woolly world that new islandbecause it’s comfortable to unzip your old skin and slip into a new costume.

If you haven’t guessed it yet, the “fabricated” part of the nickname should reveal it: it is centered on the cardboard. Considering there are very few projects with this aesthetic to date (RIP your little Vita franchise that might), it’s not only unique, but serves the team well when it comes to level design. It’s still a “linear world-hopping” shindig, but the sights and sounds are so enjoyable that you’ll want to keep going despite its overly traditional setup.

Nintendo borrows a decent amount from its 2.5D platforming manual (more recently, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Jelly) to open up the scenes a bit. Admittedly, the moves are generally carefree, but there are plenty of secrets (flowers and hidden objects), objectives (red coins), and costumes to mop up if you want to go the extra mile. The great thing is that Yoshi can throw eggs in the foreground and background at will, with a nice little glowing reticle to highlight kills and confirmed targets before throwing them. You’re not frustratingly wasting eggs trying to find that dark part of a hidden wall; instead, you are oddly looking for fun. Its good!

At least once in each level, craft world will elicit a giggle or two. A moment of heavy laughter involved a barn full of mice hanging from the rafters. To frighten them and ensue a looney tunes-esque chase around a maze of paths, you have to inflate an inflatable cat. Even some of the repeated concepts like getting on a train and punching enemies or grabbing coins along the way are fanciful.

In the next fleeting moment, craft world will play it safe or bring in mechanics that aren’t fully realized. The collectibles are mostly cosmetic (once you have an outfit that can block a few hits, they all mix together), leaving you at the mercy of Yoshi’s base kit for the entire game. There’s also the issue of the access control with the main collectible flower, requiring a certain amount of progress, which isn’t so bad if you catch three or four per level, but still begs the question of “why is it here?” You can see how Nintendo could have improved their game amidst the cute presentation and wonder why they didn’t.

The cooperative is a big part of craft world‘s DNA and I strongly suggest you play the whole game with a friend. This opens up all sorts of strategies like riding on each other’s backs and spitting at each other to knock down enemies and hazards when you’re out of eggs, adding an extra layer on top of the generally basic walkthroughs . Plus, having a second set of eyes to find secrets is always great.

Most of my career in the marvelous cardboard universe of Yoshi’s craft world, littered with a myriad of ridiculous Yoshi noises, happened with a smile on my face. It’s not the kind of project that’s going to set the world on fire like tropical frostbut it still has more heart than most studios could ever hope to give in their lifetime.
